James Ellroy was born in Los Angeles in 1948, the son of Armand Ellroy and Geneva (Jean) Hilliker Ellroy. In 1954, Armand and Jean divorced, James staying with his mother. On 22 June 1958, Jean Ellroy was found strangled in El Monte, California. James was confronted with the news of the killing on his return from a weekend away with his father.
The murderer was never found, and Jean's death had a profound and lasting affect on James. Much of his youth was spent as a petty criminal and he used both drink and drugs. In 1979, he wrote his first novel 'Brown's Requiem' and since then 15 books have followed, along with numerous magazine articles. |
